As big a fan as I am of all sorts of sports, there are some games that when showed on a digital screen have completely blown my mind. Instead of going on and on about the value of sport, I will go straight into three mythical sports in particular that have won my heart over.
From the Legend of Korra Universe, comes a sport called pro-bending. In this universe, some people are gifted with the talent to ‘bend’ the basic elements of earth, fire, air and water. Pro-bending is a game in which two teams of three members each (with the ability to bend three different elements) battle each other on a ring shaped podium that is high in the air. The aim of the game is to occupy as much space on the ring as possible or to drive the opposing members of the team over the edge of the ring. I love this game because of the ways in which the ‘bending’ imitates the major martial arts techniques from the Far East.
I don’t need to say much about Quidditch as the Harry Potter universe and this game is something we grew up reading about and watching unfold on the big screen. For those of you who don’t know. It is like playing soccer or rugby on broomsticks with the goal posts and the playing field being way, way, way up in the air.
I watched The Road to El Dorado quite by accident and loved every single second of it. In it, two thieves – Miguel and Tulio – stumble upon a hidden Mayan paradise with lots and lots of gold. The people, being sheltered for all of their lives, assume the duo are Gods. As the adventure in the movie goes on, they stumble upon a Mesoamerican game called simply ‘Ball’ which seems like a mix between basketball with a really high hoop and soccer.
Which of these three is your favorite? Do you have other fictional sports you’ve heard about that you love? Let me know!
